Preface

St Teresa of Avila is a specialist on prayer; that is why she is proclaimed a ‘Doctor of the Church’ by Pope Paul VI in 1970. Foundress to the Discalced Carmelites, we hail her as spiritual guide and inspiration on our way to God, who is the desire of our souls, made to love Him alone.

We are royalty, for we are adopted sons and daughters of the King of the heavenly Jerusalem. In calling our souls castles, it implies that a King dwells within. Castles are constructed as a fitting dwelling place of a king, and have many rooms and halls: some are readily accessible to all, while others are hidden and only for the selected few whom the king allows to go into.
